Airplaying Live Events In Egypt

Yesterday I watched full screen on my MacBook, while listening from my iPhone connected to a speaker, the events unfolding in Egypt, on Al Jazeera (which is not available on my local cable service.) Today I decided to try Apple's Airplay using my iPhone and connecting to my big screen TV, using Apple TV. It worked!

Two days after Alfred (the storm) passed through our area, a local tree cutter came along with his mates and started clearing up part of the road. He's cutting up trees that fell to the left of our street, while to the right we had downed electrical wires. I saw his crew all over town after that (Hill Street, Halllady, et. al.) and I think they actually helped in getting our electrical service turned back on (considering CL&P has done a pretty lousy job.) I don't care if they're being paid by the town, the utility, or whoever, they did us a service by clearing our road.

Everyone living in Suffield should applaud their service!

(Hey, I don't know for sure that the FB page was created by them, but I "like" them anyway. They seem like good guys.)

I've looked in several reference books for this one, but can't seem to pin it down, so I'm not sure what type of mushroom it is. Out of all the mushrooms I've been able to spot so far this year, I like this one the best. The ridges on it are very distinctive, it's chocolate colored, ruffled, and looks like it would be downright delicious, even though it's probably highly poisonous.

I've been trying to figure out what all the mushrooms are that have been popping up in the area this past summer and fall. So I bought, a Peterson Field Guide on Mushrooms.

A notable quote: "This mushroom eventually kills its host tree-by the time its large clumps are found at the base of an otherwise healthy-looking tree, nothing can be done to halt the disease." Unfortunately, I found this and several other clumps of jack-o'-lantern mushrooms at the base of a wonderfully beautiful Cypress Tree growing on a neighbor's lawn.

Just days before Hurricane Irene was due to hit there was a mad rush, by the farming community here, to collect as much of the tobacco crop as possible. This field was plucked quickly late Saturday afternoon. All the tractors were lined up in front of the corn field. Check here to see what it looked like before the tobacco was picked.

A hurricane is a coming this way, and the populace has gone into panic mode, emptying store shelves of water, and other items (batteries), which we usually have on hand regularly (you never know when an emergency will strike. Mother Nature is an unpredictable bitch!) I've been through tornados, earthquakes (Alaska), khamsins (sandstorms in Cairo), and blizzards. But never a hurricane. And even though we've been without electricity several times and know the ropes, there's one thing we haven't had for quite some time, which I personally think is essential, but is never mentioned on "emergency" lists - a battery operated television. So, today we went out a purchased a new fangled digital flat screen battery ACDC television, which we can also use in our VW Vanagon for road trips. A TeeVee during emergencies is good to have for local news, especially if your electricity goes out for days at a time.

Just a suggestion folks.

It's not Maggie's Farm, but it's a local farm stand, which I will no longer patronize.

Back in April the town of Suffield had an opportunity to vote (again) on replacing the town library. The library has leaking ceilings/roof and is in need of extensive repairs. Plus it has limited bookshelf space. The local GOP decided to fight it and supporters put up signs expressing their frustrations. I don't care what your political views are, and I respect your opinion, but as you can see from the photo the signs were an in-your-face out and out blatant attack.

I noticed the owner of the farm stand received close to $300,000.00 in farm subsidies a couple of years ago. I was wondering if it was for his lost tobacco crop during a very wet summer here. And, just like Michel Bachmann, who also receives thousands in government money, they don't want to share. It's okay for them, but when it's for improving the community they say "no."

Well, there are plenty of farm stands around here, and I say "no" to them.
